A workshop recap from Artwist by Sudeep, in collaboration with Mishijal Foundation
Every workshop we run at Artwist starts with the same quiet hope: that by the end of the session, someone in the room will look at something ordinary — a used newspaper, a piece of cardboard, a bottle they were about to throw away — and see it differently.
That’s exactly what happened at Panipat Institute of Engineering & Technology, where Artwist partnered with Mishijal Foundation to conduct Waste2Wonder, a hands-on art session built around one simple question: what if waste isn’t the end of something, but the beginning?
The Goal Was Simple
Change how students look at waste.
Not through a lecture. Not through a poster on a wall. Through their own hands.
From “This Is Waste” to “What Could This Become?”
We opened with quizzes, polls, and open conversation — not to test students, but to loosen a habit of thought most of us carry without noticing: the reflex to look at a discarded object and immediately think, this is trash.
Slowly, the room’s questions started to shift. Instead of “where do I throw this?”, students began asking “what can I make from this?”
That shift is small on paper. In the room, it’s the whole point.
Create. Collaborate. Transform.
With sleeves rolled up, students got to work:
- Discarded newspapers were folded, shaped, and turned into birds — each one a little different, a little imperfect, a little alive.
- Cardboard, headed for a bin an hour earlier, became a full sculpture of a dog.
But if you’d walked around the room, you’d have noticed the real transformation wasn’t happening on the tables. It was happening in the students — in the concentration on their faces, the small arguments over how to fold a wing, the pride when something finally held its shape.
One student told us that through this workshop, she discovered a creative side of herself she hadn’t known was there. That, more than any finished bird or sculpture, is what a workshop like this is really for.
The Human Skills Behind AI
We talked about this openly with the students: AI can generate, automate, and accelerate almost anything today.
But it can’t question. It can’t imagine. It can’t collaborate, experiment, or take ownership the way a person can — the way a room full of engineering students did with a stack of old newspapers.
Those are distinctly human skills. And they’re worth protecting, practicing, and nurturing — especially in students who will spend their careers working alongside AI, not in spite of it.
Where Waste2Wonder Meets SDG 12
Waste2Wonder connects directly to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production.
SDG 12 isn’t only about managing waste after it’s created. It’s about rethinking how we consume, create, and use resources in the first place — catching the moment before something becomes waste, and asking whether it has to.
That’s the mindset we tried to plant in Panipat: not “how do I dispose of this responsibly,” but “how do I see potential in this before I decide it’s disposable.”
The Biggest Takeaway
Waste2Wonder was never really about birds or sculptures.
It was about building a mindset — one where students pause, even for a second, before discarding something, and ask what it could become instead.
Don’t just see what something is. Imagine what it could become.
